Day 27, Seattle to Olympic National Park

Day 27 was a great day to start the Olympic National Park segment of our trip. Katy, Jason, Babs, and I piled into “Abe” and headed to the ferry to cross the Puget Sound. The ferry holds about 100 vehicles and takes thirty minutes to cross the sound.
Our first stop after leaving the ferry was Port Gamble, a quaint little town named after a lieutenant killed in the war of 1812. We had actually passed the town but Babs wanted to see it so after about five miles, we turned around and found everything closed except for the general store.
It was at the general store where I made the mistake of asking the clerk if there were any grocery or liquor stores at Forks, where our cabin is located. She assured me that we better backtrack and stock up before we left the area, which we did. It seems that the young lady must have never made the trip to Forks because we passed no less than 10 gas stations, 4 super markets, and 4 liquor stores on the way. Basically, we had wasted two hours of our time.
Around 1:30 p.m., we had a picnic lunch at Salt Creek state park which is right on the water. There we spotted our first wildlife, deer.
After lunch, Babs, Katy, and Jason took a short hike down to the beach.
We arrived at our destination, Quileute Ocean Side Resort at about 4 p.m. Our cabin is a two bedroom unit facing the Pacific Ocean which is about 75 yards away. The bedrooms are on the ground floor and the living area with a fully equipped kitchen is on the upper level with a deck which yields a spectacular view when the sun is shining.
Before dinner we took a ride to Realto Beach in the Olympic National Park. Babs, Katy,Jason, and I explored Realto beach.
After cocktails and dinner Katy and Jason decided to explore our beach front.
Tomorrow we are off to explore the mountain, rain forest, or hot spring portion of the park, depending on the weather. The ranger told us that there was still seven foot of snow in the mountain section and there would be no hiking trails open there. Just enjoy the beauty!

Babs Says: The way to really know a place is to drive back and forth through it as many times as possible.

* A special thanks to Jason & Katy for allowing me to use some of their photos!
