2013 Winter Adventure Day 3

Day 3 is late because I had a computer meltdown and I just figured out how to fix it as I was driving down the road on Day 4.
We departed a cold, 26 degree, overcast Portage, IN at 7:45 a.m. heading west on I-80 toward Council Bluffs, IA.  Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa are the last of the rolling hill landscape heading toward the great plain states.  Where Indiana has the World famous, RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart, IN (still one of the highest level of unemployment in America), Iowa has the world famous Highway 80 Truck Stop, The World’s Largest Truck Stop!  The place makes South of The Border look like a kiddy park.  With the exception of farmland and more farmland, there is nothing else much to see from the roadway.
Next stop was President Herbert Hover’s birthplace which is National Historic site.

The actual buildings that were there during his time have all been restored to their original condition, with the exception of Hover’s outhouse. Abraham Lincoln’s outhouse had its original seats.

The interior of Hover’s outhouse was gutted and housed pumps that watered the grounds. However the ranger said it was a one seater.  Lincoln’s was a three seater.

We had a great lunch at the OX Yolk restaurant that has been in business since 1946.  We both had a sandwich called “The Bavarian” which was a Rubin-like sandwich using roast beef, ham, grilled onions, Swiss cheese, and horseradish sauce.  It was served with a fried dill picked spear. As Babs would say yummy!

We had reasonably good weather until we were about two hours from our destination; Council Bluffs, IA when it began raining. We arrived at our destination, Harrah’s Casino, Council Bluffs in pouring rain at about 5:45 p.m.  We ate dinner at the casino buffet which was nothing the write home about but priced right, free!
Tomorrow we head toward Rapid City, SD which has a winter storm warning in effect for tomorrow.
Babs Says:  Losing $15 in the slot machines is not fun.  Our reduced rate room, and “comp” meals cost us $150 due to Frank’s excellent play…NOT.
