Day 10, Another day without good internet

Day 10, once again started off with rain, then raining off and on, and ended in sunshine. The drive meandered through low forest with lots of lakes, some of which ran on for miles at a time.
It was generally a pretty boring ride but might have been gorgeous had the sun been shining and we could have seen the snow covered mountain tops in the distance. We did see a pair of huge grizzly bears and a large red fox, all of whom would not cooperate for photos!
Once again we departed the hotel before 6:30 a.m. and couldn’t even find a Mc Donald’s open for breakfast. So down the road we went. Over an hour later we finally happened upon this restaurant.
Upon entering the restaurant, this guy who looked like a “biker Santa”, was sitting at a table. Babs and I helped ourselves to coffee. Finally he stood up and I asked if they had breakfast. He asked what do you want. I said what do you have and he threw me a menu saying “no pancakes”. That was the last he spoke. We both had 2 eggs with bacon, home fries, and toast. When he served the breakfast, the “toast” was of homemade bread and approximately 6X8 and 2 inches thick. The meal was the best we have had!
We rolled into Dawson City at about 2:30 p.m. and went to Dredge #4, which is a gold mining dredge that began operating in 1898 and is the largest wooden hull dredge in North America. We took the tour which took us through three stories of the dredge and explained how it operated. This dredge produced over one million dollars in gold a year when gold was $35 per ounce!

After checking into our hotel, we drove to the visitors’ center, then to Diamond Tooth Gerties gambling Hall where I played blackjack. Babs took a walk and I gambled…doubled my money ($40), and left.

Tomorrow, we head west over the “To of the World Highway” which is a gravel road from Dawson City to Chicken, Alaska.
Once again we have no internet in our room, so I I’m sending from the hotel lobby. Photos for day 9 & 10 can hopefully be added tomorrow.
Babs Says: For last 2 nites have stayed in hotels connected with Holland American Cruise Lines. (Made reservations with them because prices were so much better). Looking down hallway is just like looking down a ship hallway-long! Ship pictures, lamps, etc. in rooms. We are in the Yukon 200 miles from Artic Circle-so why not miner décor?
