Sunday, Day four of our great Alaskan Adventure

Sunday, June 5, 2011, day four of our great Alaskan adventure found us traveling north from Dickinson, ND to Regina, SK, Canada. Along the way we drove through the northern section of Theodore Roosevelt National Park where we saw more buffalo, some of which were on the road. They seemed in no hurry to go anywhere!

The park sports beautiful hills of the northern badlands and vistas of the Little Missouri river.

It seems as though there is flooding all over North Dakota and southern Canada.

Our next stop was Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. Fort Union was the primary northern trading post from the early to mid 1800’s. It was built on the edge of the Great Missouri River which is how the trading post received it’s supplies that were traded to white trappers and native Americans for furs. The fort was "white Washed" and had ornate painting as to get the intention of the trappers and native American Indians. The trading post is staffed with park rangers who dress in period clothing and are very knowledgeable of the history of the fort.

Of course, Babs had to pose with the Buffalo head!

From Fort Union we headed north to the Canadian border. Of course the crossing had to be probably the least crossed border crossing from the US to Canada. The Canadian Border Patrol Officer thoroughly questioned us, inspected the cargo area of the Acadia keeping us for over 45 minutes before allowing us to proceed. This area of Canada is even flatter than North Dakota. Babs took a photo showing that you can see forever and a photo of oil wells in a flood area.

Tonight we are staying at a Holiday Inn Express in downtown Regina. So far our highlights have been losing $25 at the local casino and enjoying an expensive but good Chinese dinner. Tomorrow, it’s on to Edmonton, AB.

Babs says: Give way to Buffalo in the middle of the road. They can do serious damage and also leave humongous piles of poop. Look innocent when crossing the border and be sure to show the 2 allowable bottles of liquor so they don’t go searching for the rest of the case! Canada could give OPEC a run for the money if all of the wells are any indication. A room with a view is not always great.

  1. Haha, the quote "Give way to Buffalo in the middle of the road. They can do serious damage and also leave humongous piles of poop" reads like a Chinese fortune cookie (substitute "Babs" with "Confusious"). Must be your dinner talking.
