Day one, boring, uneventful, no photos

Well , Babs & I have completed the first day of our great Alaskan adventure.   We left Silver Spring at 7:15 a.m. forty five minutes past our planned departure.  We drove 657 miles today, all freeway and turnpike.  Every road outside of MD had major sections of construction with mile upon mile of one lane road.  Did I tell you I HATE THE PA TURNPIKE!!  The folks of Indiana should feel very safe as there is a State Trooper every five miles to greet you!  That might be the reason that Indiana has had the highest gas prices so far, $4.17 per gallon.  The least we paid was $3.75 in Breezewood, PA.
Tonight we are Portage, IN at a very nice Best Western.  We’ve gotten cheap in our old age and now regularly stop at a rest area in the state we plan to spend the night in and pick up all of their hotel coupon books.  That way we get a first class room for about half of what we would usually pay for the room.
Right now we’re having a cocktail and trying to figure out where to have dinner.  Unless the front desk has a suggestion, it looks like Denny’s.  From here we plan on making St. Paul or St. Cloud, MN tomorrow night.  Hopefully we won’t get caught in Chicago’s rush hour.
