Day 18, Another rainy day!

Day 18 was another rainy day. We left Chitina around 6:30 a.m. for Valdez, Alaska. On a sunny day the drive to Valdez is supposed to be one of the most beautiful drives in Alaska. The operative word here is sunny. Today, absent the sun the mountains were hidden in clouds and fog. When we got into Valdez we could not see any of the mountains or the signature Bald Eagles which are plentiful in the area. We did see the harbor and ships waiting to unload their containers.
So we headed back to Tok, Alaska where we are tonight.
The trip wasn’t a total bust because of some beautiful scenery on the way. First we found the Worthington Glacier and hiked down a short trail that placed us about 1500 yards from the base of the glacier.
We traveled through deep canyon walls for about three miles.
We also saw many waterfalls along the drive. The two most notable were Bridal Veil falls
and Horsetail falls.
On the way back to Tok is the northern entrance to Wrangell St. Elias National Park, another rough gravel and dirt road. After 22 miles of slipping and sliding on the wet surface and seeing no animals or able to view mountains we gave up and turned around.
Closer to Tok we saw this moose in the middle of a pond eating grass.

Tomorrow we leave Alaska, once again traveling through Canada to reach Haines, Alaska day after tomorrow.

Babs Says: Happy Fathers Day to Fathers everywhere.
